Statkraft and Greenvolt Power have signed a 10-year tolling agreement covering 400MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across two operating projects in Poland.

Greenvolt described the agreement as the largest publicly communicated BESS tolling deal in the EU to date. The companies announced the deal on 29 September.

The agreement covers the Ełk and Turośń Kościelna projects, each a 4-hour, 200MW/800MWh system. Ełk is located in Nowa Wieś Ełcka, and Turośń Kościelna in the municipality of the same name in Poland’s Podlaskie Voivodeship, in the northeast of the country.

Turośń Kościelna entered commercial operations in July 2026, with BYD supplying its 196 battery enclosures. Nowa Wieś Ełcka is targeted to begin commercial operations during Q4 2026.

Both projects hold capacity market (CM) contracts from Greenvolt’s win in Poland’s 2023-2024 auction round.

Under the tolling structure, Statkraft takes on the right to decide when the battery storage systems charge and discharge across energy and flexibility markets, in exchange for a fixed payment to Greenvolt.

Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy producer and a power purchase agreement (PPA) provider, said the deal marks its first large-scale BESS contract in Poland. It complements the company’s existing portfolio of third-party wind and solar assets in the market.

Statkraft’s head of origination Poland, Kornel Koronowski, said the agreement reflected the company’s ambition in the market.

“With the largest BESS transaction signed in the country to date, we continue to play an active role in supporting Poland’s energy transition,” Koronowski said.

Greenvolt Power’s business origination and market regulation director, Łukasz Zagórski, said the structure reflected the company moving further along the value chain as its projects enter operation.

“Choosing the right commercial structure is increasingly important,” Zagórski said.

The agreement adds a second layer of contracted revenue on top of the projects’ existing CM payments. Greenvolt signed a separate exclusive agreement with energy trader Entrix in September 2025 to optimise five of its large-scale Polish BESS projects.

That deal includes the two covered by the Statkraft tolling agreement. Energy-Storage.news asked Greenvolt to clarify whether the latest announcement means Statkraft takes over the two projects’ optimisation from Entrix.

“Our battery storage projects have agreements with Statkraft, while Entrix is also involved in the projects through its cooperation with Statkraft,” a Greenvolt spokesperson told Energy-Storage.news this morning (5 October).

“So both companies are involved,” the spokesperson said.

Greenvolt started construction in September 2026 on its 600MW/2,400MWh Siedlce project, which will be Poland’s largest BESS when complete. The project is also supplied by BYD and is targeted for commercial operations by the end of 2027.

The shift toward tolling and offtake structures reflects a broader change in the Polish storage market. Jakub Kupcu, country director Poland at investor Claritas Investments, said in September 2026 that the market is entering a “selective, capital-disciplined phase where execution quality matters”, noting that returns on newly built CM-contracted assets have compressed by roughly a third in recent years even as storage has secured more than 11GW of contracted CM capacity nationally.

Kupcu said layering a tolling or floor agreement on top of a bare CM contract can push the share of project costs covered by debt from around a third to nearly two-thirds, while extending loan tenors from under a decade to well over ten years.

Other developers in the Polish market have pursued similar structures this year. R.Power signed a 10-year optimisation deal with a floor for its 1.2GWh Dzięgielewo project with power firm Axpo.

EDF Power Solutions and IPP Eurus Energy Europe formed a joint venture to build and operate a 120MW/280MWh project in Porąbka, targeting commercial operation in the second half of 2027.
