VSL PowerHive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vikram Solar, has announced a 7.5GWh per annum battery energy storage system (BESS) assembly plant at Oragadam near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
The Oragadam facility is scheduled for inauguration in January 2027, with commercial operations expected to begin in April 2027. The plant is a part of its plan to build 30GWh of battery manufacturing capacity by 2030.
Vikram Solar is a solar PV module manufacturer and provider of EPC and other services to the industry, headquartered in Kolkata, India. As reported by our colleagues at PV Tech in covering a recent 1GW deal with PV cell supplier Avaada Electro, Vikram Solar is currently ramping up its production through investment in multiple gigawatts of cell, module, ingot and wafer production capacity in India as it pursues a backward integration strategy.
The 1.65 lakh square-foot facility is designed for expansion to 15GWh in subsequent phases. The plant will assemble lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based energy storage systems for utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&I) applications.

Products will include 5.016MWh and 6.25MWh liquid-cooled BESS containers, P261 battery cabinets, utility-scale storage systems and renewable energy-integrated storage solutions.
“Storage is the bridge between India’s renewable ambition and round-the-clock clean power,” said Gyanesh Chaudhary, chairman and managing director, Vikram Solar.
“As the country scales up solar and wind, the ability to store that energy reliably will define the next phase of the transition, and that capability must be built in India. The new plant is a decisive step in that direction and extends Vikram Solar’s role in the clean energy value chain from generating power to storing it.”
PowerHive also plans to enter battery cell manufacturing through a 7.5GWh programme from 2028. The company said it is developing indigenous battery technologies and has initiated multiple patent filings as it seeks to reduce reliance on imported know-how.
The company did not disclose the value of investment planned for the facility or its expected annual production volumes beyond the stated capacity.
The manufacturing roadmap comes as India prepares for increased demand for storage to support the integration of renewable energy into the power grid.
Recently, India’s Union Cabinet approved INR 1.86 trillion (US$19.3 billion) for the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor, including INR 500 billion for 50GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support renewable integration through FY2032-33.
Additionally, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) proposed new grid-operating requirements for standalone energy storage systems, including a minimum 50MW aggregate trial run, staged commissioning provisions for larger projects and primary frequency-response requirements for qualifying storage systems connected at 33kV and above.
India’s renewable energy transition, from solar PV and energy storage to grid integration, will be a key topic of discussion at the Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo, co-located with the Energy Storage Summit India (ESS India), in Greater Noida on 22-24 October 2026.
