One of the main standards adopted for stationary energy storage systems (ESS) is UL 1973 (Batteries for Use in Stationary and Motive Auxiliary Power Applications).
This critical standard for manufacturers has recently been updated to its 3rd Edition, dated 2022. The scope of this standard includes cells, battery modules, battery pack/rack, and the battery management system.
Understanding these updates is vital for manufacturers as they plan milestones and time-to-market for their products. This session will discuss updates to the standard and highlight requirements important to manufacturers for their battery systems. We will also briefly address the various functional safety requirements in this standard for safety critical controls.
