There’s been a flurry of BESS project completions across Europe this past week, with projects completed in Germany, Estonia, Belgium, Denmark and Bulgaria by RheinEnergie/SMA, BSP, BStor, European Energy and Sunotec respectively, totalling nearly 700MWh of capacity.

RheinEnergie, SMA Altenso commission 64MWh Germany project

Utility RheinEnergie has commissioned a 24.5MW/64MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Germany in partnership with SMA Altenso, the system integration arm of power conversion system (PCS) firm SMA Solar.

SMA Altenso provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, including the medium-voltage grid connection and associated infrastrcuture.

The project is in Einbeck, Lower Saxony, and uses SMA’s inverters and control technology, alongside 16 BESS units. The companies didn’t name the BESS supplier, but images of the site show they are from Chinese EV and BESS firm BYD.

Activity in the German market has ramped up in the past few months since the government clarified that the exemption from charge-discharge grid fees for projects coming online by 4 August 2029 would remain.

Just yesterday we published a roundup of projects and portfolios securing financing or suppliers totalling 2GWh of capacity, while last week BW ESS started early construction work on a project which may eventually reach 1GW/5.7GWh in size.

Baltic Storage Platform puts 200MWh Hertz 2 project in Estonia into operation

Baltic Storage Platform (BSP) has put the 100MW/200MWh Hertz 2 BESS project in Estonia online.

The project is in Aruküla, Raasiku municipality, Harju County, and follows commissioning of the same size Hertz 1 BESS project in February (the projects are replicas of each other).

BSP is a JV between developer Evecon, IPP Corsica Sole and investor Mirova. Evecon said the two projects combined cover a large share of Estonia’s storage needs.

They will participate in a range of electricity markets but especially frequency regulation services, key since the Baltic states disconnected from Russia’s grid and joined mainland Europe’s last year.

Minister of Energy and the Environment Andres Sutt said that the Hertz 1 and Hertz 2 BESS projects have proven the attractiveness of Estonia’s energy sector to international investors. “The Hertz 1 and Hertz 2 BESS projects are important for balancing the entire power system and for bringing more renewable electricity to the market — this is exactly the kind of flexible capacity that Estonia needs more and more at a time when the Baltic States maintain their own frequency.”

The project was delivered by system integrator Nidec Conversion, which subcontracted to WiSo Engineering for construction and electrical works, while optimiser Yuso is trading the BESS.

Both projects were financed by a €85.6 million (US$98.14 million) loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, secured in November 2025.

Dstor 140MWh BESS in Belgium goes online

BESS platform BStor has put its 50MW/140MWh DStor project online in Belgium. The project was jointly developed with industrial group Duferco.

Tesla provided the BESS while engineering groups Equans and Tractebel worked on the project too. BStor posted a timelapse video of construction on its LinkedIn page, see here.

Construction began on the project in January last year. A few months later, we heard from BStor managing director Pierre Bayart on how it navigated financing its larger, 100MW/270MWh Estor-lux II project.

Just yesterday, one of the largest projects to have secured project financing in Europe was announced: the 2.8GWh Green Turtle project by Giga Storage, also in Belgium.

European Energy completes two Denmark projects totalling 152MWh

IPP European Energy has put two solar PV co-located BESS projects into operation in Denmark, totalling 152MWh of capacity.

The Stouby (28MW/112MWh) and Agersted (10MW/40 MWh) projects are its third major solar-plus-storage systems to enter operations in Denmark, following the 200MWh Kvosted project completed around the turn of 2025/26.

Both solar PV projects were already operational, and the newly added BESS will help integrated the solar production into the grid, while also providing balancing and trading services on the grid.

European Energy said it completed EPC and integration of the BESS projects within a year.

Poul Jacobsen, EVP and Head of EPC at European Energy: “The project required close coordination across engineering, civil works, electrical installation and system integration. Completing the work within this timeframe demonstrates the maturity of our construction organisation and our experience in delivering increasingly complex renewable energy projects.”

Sunotec commissions 126MWh Bulgaria project

System integrator Sunotec has announced the completion and commercial operation of a 50MW/126MWh BESS in Byala Slatina, Bulgaria.

It will be optimised by trader GEN-I under a five-year partnership between the two companies. Sunotec didn’t however say who the owner of the BESS project is.

Bulgaria has quickly become one of the busiest countries in Europe for large-scale BESS activity. Just last month Sunotec announced completion on a c.600MWh project there, as did EPC firm Solarpro. The month before that, IPPs Enery and Rezolv completed projects totalling a combined 840MWh.
