‘Multi-day’ energy storage startup Noon Energy makes 1GW US AI infrastructure deployment agreement

US ‘multi-day’ energy storage startup Noon Energy has made an agreement with renewables platform Sabanci Renewables to deploy 1GW of Noon’s technology for AI infrastructure in the US.

Announced 13 August, the companies will co-develop ultra-long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects, integrating Noon Energy’s reversible electrofuels battery energy storage systems (BESS) with Sabanci’s renewables portfolio “to deliver 100% clean, firm power for AI infrastructure.”

This collaboration targets up to 1GW of capacity. Noon noted that sister company of Sabanci Renewables and Noon Energy investor Sabanci Climate Ventures enabled the collaboration.

The projects developed through the agreement will be structured as power purchase agreements (PPAs) or capacity offtake agreements for systems up to 1GW.

This will also assist with Sabanci Renewables’ goal of having a 3GW renewable portfolio in the US in the next five years.

In April, Noon announced an agreement with Meta to reserve up to 1GW/100GWh of LDES capacity, beginning with a 25MW/2.5GWh project, scheduled for completion by 2028.

Following the success of the 2.5GWh project, Noon will begin delivering systems under the 100GWh supply contract.

Noon Energy’s battery operates on principles similar to flow batteries, storing energy in liquid electrolyte tanks separated from the power stack. Like flow batteries, the Noon fuel cell system allows power and energy to be decoupled.

The system comprises three primary components: a power block utilising reversible solid oxide fuel cell technology to convert electricity into stored energy; a charge tank that transforms electricity into a carbon-based storage medium while releasing oxygen; and a discharge tank that draws oxygen from the air to convert stored energy back into electricity.

In January, Noon unveiled its first operational demonstration project. Though the company provided limited technical specifications—such as power output capacity—it claimed the system can discharge for 200 hours at maximum output.

ESN Premium’s March analysis compared 100-hour LDES batteries from Form, Noon, and Ore Energy. All three can discharge for at least 100 hours, with Noon claiming over 200 hours, though this remains unproven in operational settings.

Iron-air batteries can fully discharge to 0% state of charge (SOC) without damage due to their reversible rusting process, unlike lithium-ion batteries that degrade at extreme charge levels. Noon Energy hasn’t revealed its deep discharge capabilities, which are likely inferior to iron-air systems.

Because Noon’s technology relies on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs)—where 0% SOC typically represents system failure—deep discharge is probably limited, unless the company’s design addresses this constraint.

BESS developers and especially LDES developers have increasingly been making agreements to power AI infrastructure. Earlier this week, ESN reported that energy storage developer and system integrator Energy Vault entered into a strategic agreement supporting hyperscaler AI data centres for a customer in Texas.

ESN Premium’s July analysis examined recent collaborations between BESS technology firms and other providers to create data centre-tailored energy storage solutions.
