
Utility Georgia Power has completed construction of the 49.5MW/198MWh Moody Battery Facility, located outside of Valdosta, Georgia, US.
Announced 27 July, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Moody battery energy storage system (BESS), which is adjacent to the Moody Air Force Base, and also makes use of pre-existing solar transmission infrastructure.
Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Jason Shaw, Lowndes County Manager Paige Dukes, local commissioners, Valdosta City Council members, and community partners joined Georgia Power leaders to celebrate the project’s ribbon cutting.
The Moody BESS was approved with the 128MW/512MWh Robins, 57.5MW/230MWh Hammond, and 530MW/2,120MWh McGrau Phase I & II BESS projects.

Construction began on the four projects, totalling 765MW of BESS capacity, in May 2025.
In 2024, the PSC unanimously approved Georgia Power’s plans to build the projects, which had a combined capacity of 500MW at the time.
The Georgia PSC approved construction of nine additional BESS facilities across eight sites statewide, in 2025, adding over 3,000MW of planned storage capacity. Sites were selected based on deployment advantages, including existing company plant locations, company-owned land, and proximity to substations.
The new facilities will be located at Plants Bowen, Hammond, McIntosh, Wansley, and Yates, with stand-alone sites in Hall and McDuffie counties. To support growing renewable energy demand, the company also received approval for two solar-plus-storage systems with a combined 350MW capacity. Located in Laurens and Dougherty counties, these projects are designed to maximise solar generation while minimising land disturbance.
In April of this year, the utility filed a request with the PSC to approve an all-source capacity request for proposal (RFP) for 2,000MW – 6,000MW of new dispatchable capacity resources.
Georgia Power had also separately requested certification for approximately 385MW of new solar resources through its Clean and Renewable Energy Subscription (CARES) 2023 programme.
The CARES programme allows commercial and industrial (C&I) customers to purchase subscriptions for a share of renewable electricity generation from specific projects. In September 2025, Georgia Power certified five solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) within its borders, for a combined capacity of just over 1GW.
Earlier this month, OpenAI announced its plans for a 3,200MW data centre in Effingham County, Georgia, which will be served by Georgia Power.
OpenAI stated it would pay the full infrastructure and electric service costs to serve its facility and would fulfill requirements for long-term energy contracts and include financial assurances designed to protect Georgia Power customers.
The company further claimed it had agreed to provide up to 1,000MW of flexible demand response where it will reduce its power use in times of high demand.
