Spanish developer and independent power producer (IPP) Zelestra has energised its 1GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

IPPs Zelestra, BNZ and ALFI have secured offtake and financing to hybridise solar projects with BESS across Spain, Italy, Portugal and Romania.

IPP Zelestra and utility EDP’s recent PPA deal for a solar-plus-storage project in Spain was the first of its kind in Europe and ‘moves the market forward’, a Zelestra executive told Energy-Storage.news.

Major BESS route-to-market (RTM) deals have been announced in Poland, by Greenvolt and Entrix, and in Italy, by Zelestra and BKW.

Zelestra has signed a Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) contract in India with public sector corporation SJVN.
