Utility-scale battery storage systems in Western Australia supplied 37.2% of peak demand on 9 May, marking one of the highest battery storage penetration levels recorded in an isolated grid globally.

NZ’s electricity system is expected to fall below minimum security standards by 2031 despite a record of new generation and BESS projects.

Fluence’s chief growth officer, Jeff Monday, and Australia strategy lead, Sam Markham, discuss hyperscale opportunities, grid-forming evolution, and the company’s high-density Smartstack deployment plans.

New South Wales has been warned that it must accelerate the development of battery energy storage systems to meet its 2030 targets.

Hamilton Locke partner Matt Baumgurtel warns of a seismic shift as distributed energy resources with “zero marginal cost” emerge.

Jeff Monday of Fluence believes Australia can transform its data centre boom from a grid constraint into a growth opportunity using BESS.

Sam Markham of Fluence Australia believes grid-forming BESS are essential to deliver a safe, secure and affordable decarbonised power system.

Battery energy storage projects have emerged as the dominant force in Australia’s energy investment landscape, accounting for 46% of the nation’s 64GW development pipeline, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) latest quarterly report.

Bigger, longer-duration projects and more sophisticated deal structuring are driving the energy storage industry forward, but a lack of common approaches from transmission system operators (TSOs) remains a challenge.

The managing director of Bluestar Energy Capital’s European BESS platform Noveria Energy gave a Q&A to Energy-Storage.news ahead of the Energy Storage Summit 2026 in London next month.
