Around 20.4GWh of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) came online globally last month, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) total to 208GWh.
Those two figures are 61% and 43% higher than the equivalent periods in 2025, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, which provided the stats. We publish the figures each month on ESN Premium.
China accounted for almost two-thirds of the figure, commissioning over 12GWh, while Europe installed over 2GWh for the fifth month in a row.
The European market has seen a particular acceleration, with its 22GWh commissioned in the first nine months of the year up 182%. See the full table of figures below.

Some 1,263MW/2,941MWh came online in Europe, including a 600MWh project from EDF in Belgium, a 773MWh project in Bulgaria from Renalfa, and Switzerland’s largest project.
China typically accounts for 50-90% of global deployments with a few exceptions (like July, when Saudi Arabia was the largest market, accounting for 37% of the 33.5GWh that came online).
The largest projects that came online during the month globally were in India and China, Benchmark said, while the average duration of projects coming online reached 2.9-hours.
Over 600MWh of the 20.4GWh was non-lithium technologies, Benchmark added, mostly from China. These included a 4-hour, 380MWh flow battery and two sodium-ion projects, of 1MWh and 40MWh each.
