Flexible Connection Agreements (FCAs) must not be used simply to exclude BESS from connecting to the grid, but the industry will have to make do with them and all their imperfections for the foreseeable.

The grid-scale energy storage market in Germany is in a strong position but key questions around grid fees, grid connections, FCAs and the upcoming capacity market remain, speakers at the upcoming Energy Storage Summit Germany 2026 said. 

Greater clarity in both government policy and market mechanisms could be essential if the German BESS industry is to realise its potential.
