Greensmith, the California-based provider of energy storage software and integration services, has partnered with energy equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä to deliver storage systems globally.

Under the terms of the cooperation, Wärtsilä is to provide energy storage systems integrated with solar PV and its Smart Power Generation power plant to form a hybrid energy solution.

The entire system to is to be powered by Greensmith’s software-based plant controller (GEMS) that interacts directly with the battery, the power control system (PCS) and the battery management system (BMS). Greensmith’s GEMS software today is the most widely-deployed energy storage software. For its part, Wärtsilä will assume EPC and O&M services to customers worldwide.

The hybrid energy system offering by the joint efforts of the two companies is to provide a consistent, reliable, sustainable and affordable source of power. Such systems are particularly economical in remote or island communities where access to the national grid is limited and/or microgrids are in use. The pairing of solar PV with storage systems to utilise self-consumption of solar enables the burden of variable generation to be balanced on the grid.

"We selected Greensmith Energy as a technology partner due to their deep industry knowledge and expertise in delivering safe and reliable grid-scale energy storage and system integration solutions,” said Javier Cavada, president of Wärtsilä Energy Solutions. “We are excited to combine over 18 decades of industry experience with Greensmith technology to further broaden our offering capability by delivery of intelligent energy storage solutions together with our Smart Power Generation and Solar PV solutions.”

“We are honoured to partner with a world-class organization like Wärtsilä as we continue to fulfill our vision to deploy the world’s most advanced energy storage solutions to every corner of the world,” said John Jung, president and CEO of Greensmith Energy. “2016 is proving to be pivotal for Greensmith as demonstrated by our partnership with Wärtsilä in addition to deploying over 100 megawatts of energy storage by the end of the year.”
