

IPP Prosalia has commissioned a 15MW/60MWh battery storage system at a solar PV plant in Portugal, while power group EDP has added one to a hybrid wind and solar project in Spain.
Prosalia adds batteries to Portuguese solar PV plant
Independent power producer (IPP) Prosalia has integrated a 15MW/60MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) into its 34.4MWp Albispark solar PV plant in Castelo Branco, Portugal.
It is the company’s first solar-plus-storage project, and Portugal country manager Pedro Pereira da Silva commented: “After years focused on expanding renewable generation, the challenge now is to provide the flexibility needed to integrate that energy into the grid efficiently and securely. Energy storage plays a key role in this transformation.”
Trina Storage, part of the PV giant Trinasolar, provided the BESS units for the 4-hour duration project. Prosalia claimed it as one of the largest BESS projects in Portugal, in its announcement last month (23 July).

The project received funding under Portugal’s share of the EU-wide Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) funding, via a scheme that is supporting 43 projects totalling 500MW of energy storage capacity, with winners finalised in January 2025. The Portuguese government is following that up with another auction for financial support for storage this year, following the Iberian blackout in April 2025.
Prosalia plans to hybridise its other solar PV plants in Portugal with BESS, including its Santo Varão (Coimbra, 5.5MW) and Algeruz (Palmela, 8MW) projects.
EDP adds batteries to solar and wind project in Spain
Power firm and utility EDP has added a BESS unit to its Las Lomillas solar and wind project in Cuenca, Spain, on which it is now undergoing testing.
That makes it the first of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal-headquartered EDP said in its release also at the end of last month (29 July).
The project has 50MW of grid export capacity with a total of 122MW of capacity across the wind, solar and BESS portions. The project comprises:
- 33 wind turbines totalling 49.5MW, installed in 2005
- A 36MW solar PV array, installed in 2025
- A 36MW/72MWh BESS, installed recently
The technologies are coordinated by an energy management system (EMS) that makes operational decisions based on advanced algorithms and under the supervision of EDP’s energy management teams and control centre, the company said.
The project also benefits from Recovery and Resilience funding from the EU, totalling €6.2 million (US$7.14 million). That scheme was also finalised last year.
EDP said it now has nearly 1GW of hybridised capacity across Portugal and Spain, around 75:25 split between the two countries. There are a mix of solar, BESS, wind, hydropower and pumped hydro.
Activity in Spain’s grid-scale energy storage market has picked up recently, with large-scale projects financed or offtake-contracted by project owners Return, Ignitis and Grenergy in the past month alone.
