Green Flexibility, Suncatcher, SWB and ArcelorMittal progress large-scale BESS projects in Germany totalling 324MWh

A quartet of Germany BESS project announcements: Green Flexibility has completed a project, Suncatcher has enlisted Statkraft to optimise three solar-plus-storage ones, SWB and Be.storaged are together building a system, while ArcelorMittal has enlisted EDF Power Solutions to do so.

The flurry of news comes ahead of the Energy Storage Summit at The Battery Show Europe, in Stuttgart, Germany next month (9-11 June).

Green Flexbility completes 40MW/80MWh Germany project

Battery energy storage system (BESS) platform Green Flexibility has inaugurated a 40MW/80MWh project in Balzhausen, Germany. It started building a project in September last year.

Green Flexibility said it is connected to the ‘feed-in socket’ of the distribution network of operator LEW, a new way of connecting projects to the grid being used by some DNOs. It aims to bring renewable and storage onto the grid faster.

Barbara Plura, asset manager at LEW distribution network and project manager of the feed-in socket, said: “We are very pleased that the first system connected to our feed-in socket is now operational. Battery storage systems are indispensable for the energy system of the future. Especially in Bavarian Swabia, with its high density of photovoltaics and strong production of renewable energy, they help to use the electricity grid more efficiently.”

We spoke to Green Flexibility co-founder and CEO Christoph Ostermann shortly after its public launch in early 2025 while Leandra Boes, director of asset management, spoke to us in a Q&A in the lead-up to the Energy Storage Summit 2026 in February.

SWB and Be.storaged partner on project at legacy plant

Legacy power plant operator SWB (Swb Erzeugung AG & Co) has partnered with battery energy storage system (BESS) developer and EPC firm Be.storaged to jointly build a project in Bremen’s industrial port.

The project will be built on an SWB power plant site, which is being demolished this year, for commissioning in early 2028.

The BESS will be an 85MW/170MWh, 2-hour system and, like many projects in Germany, has a flexible connection agreement (FCA) with the grid operator. SWB was an early mover in the grid-scale market in Germany, building a 20MW system in 2018.

Be.storaged is part of utility EWE, and last year it deployed a 20MW/40MWh project for its parent company.

ArcelorMittal enlists EDF Power Solutions for 25MW/50MWh project

Steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal has enlisted the German EPC and project services arm of multinational power firm EDF for a 25MW/50MWh project in Bremen.

EDF Power Solutions Deutschland will install and maintain the BESS under a 10-year service agreement with ArcelorMittal.

EDF Power Solutions recently won a major, 250MW contract to build ‘Grid Booster’ BESS projects for Germany transmission system operator (TSO) Amprion.

The firm is active in building and operating BESS projects globally via its independent power producer (IPP) arms, as well as providing offtake and optimisation for other companies’ BESS projects, particularly in the UK: see all coverage of EDF here.

Suncatcher enlists Statkraft for hybrid project optimisation

Developer-operator Suncatcher has partnered with power firm Statkraft on three solar-plus-storage projects in Germany, in a deal which runs to 2031.

Statkraft will optimise and trade the three projects, called Klötze II, Salzwedel and Seehausen, which total 34.5MWp of solar PV and 12MW/24MWh of BESS capacity. The BESS will be charged exclusively by the solar arrays. Although not explicitly said, that means they almost certainly have long-term subsidies under Germany’s Innovation Tenders for hybrid projects.
