The Clean Energy and Solar Power Portal Awards sponsored by Trina Solar, an annual celebration of the PV industry from Energy-Storage.News’ UK-based publisher, Solar Media, will include commercial-scale and large-scale energy storage as a category for the first time this October.

The awards event returns for its fourth successive year and will be co-located with the inaugural Clean Energy Awards, established to celebrate the successes of the wider clean technology space.

Nominations deadline is 30 June.

Matching onsite generation to energy demand seems a natural fit for solar PV and energy storage technologies. At Solar Media’s recent Energy Storage Summit, a poll was taken of attendees, comprising many solar developers, project financiers, industry experts and other stakeholders, who estimated that around 50MW to 100MW of commercial projects could be installed in the UK this year.

Unlike the US, where peak electricity pricing for businesses means storage has at least one relatively assured business case to lean on, the drivers for commercial storage in Britain are more complex and will be about offering various different services as applicable.

With the UK industry still in its early stages, nominations will not be limited to completed projects. However commercial projects have started to be announced as well as commercial-scale demonstrators and pilots, meaning those that are getting in early to this space are likely to want to see their efforts celebrated before their industry peers.

At Solar Media’s Energy Storage Summit, Chris Roberts, head of UK solar developer Poweri Systems, said he was excited about the prospect of working on commercial battery projects. While it was too early for him to be able to reveal much about the specific projects he is working on, in the video interview below Roberts explains the value proposition of commercial storage in Britain and why he feels the need for technical expertise will in itself be a barrier to entry for this market.

Every commercial storage project will be different – Poweri Systems at Energy Storage Summit ’16.
