BW ESS has put its 350MW/1,240MWh Hams Hall BESS project in the UK into operation, the largest in Europe.
The owner-operator announced commercial operations on the roughly 3.5-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project today (2 November), which is adjacent to National Grid’s Hams Hall substation in the West Midlands, England.
Inverter and BESS firm Sungrow supplied its technology for the project, and BW ESS said that it reached commercial operation 20 days after energisation.
It is the largest BESS we are aware of in Europe to reach commercial operation. Hams Hall’s capacity will increase to 400MW/1,424MWh once a second phase is complete. Power group EDF is optimising the project.

The firm is active across Europe, Japan and Australia and has two other announced major UK projects, the 100MW/331MWh Bramley project and the 200MW/857MWh Berkswell project. It sold a 49% stake in its UK portfolio to investor AIP last year.
Bramley entered commercial operations in early 2025, then also the largest in Europe, and construction kicked off on Berkswell in September 2026.
