Independent power producer (IPP) Northland Power has closed financing on two large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland.
Northland Power, headquartered in Toronto, Canada, announced the close of ~PLN500 million (~US$128.66 million) in financing for the projects earlier this week (30 September).
The funding, from undisclosed Canadian and Polish financial institutions, supports the development of projects totalling 300MW of output and 1,200MWh of energy storage capacity, together with government grants from the Polish National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, which provided around PLN1 billion.
The news comes just a few days after the IPP announced the start of commercial operations of Jurassic BESS, an 80MW/160MWh asset which is currently the largest BESS in the Canadian province of Alberta. The IPP is also part of the consortium that delivered the 250MW/1,000MWh Oneida energy storage project in Ontario.

The two projects are Mieczysławów, which is 200MW/800MWh and Kamionka, which is 100MW/400MWh. Both are currently under construction, with Mieczysławów expected to enter commercial operation in early 2028. Kamionka is due online by mid-2028.
The projects both have 17-year capacity market contracts in place with the ability to earn additional revenue from arbitrage and ancillary services markets.
Northland Power acquired Mieczysławów and Kamionka from Greenvolt Power, another international IPP, in November 2025. Acquired at the pre-construction stage, the new owner obtained the grant funding and advanced development, although it is thought the capacity market contracts were part of Greenvolt’s 1.2GW of awards in 2023. Greenvolt recently began construction on the country’s largest BESS, the 600MW/2,400MWh Siedlce project, due online next year.
‘Genuinely impressive’ scale of Polish market
Northland Power expects the projects to contribute roughly CA$40 million (US$28.14 million) to CA$50 million of combined annual adjusted EBITDA.
The IPP is further involved in the Polish energy market through Baltic Power, a 1,140MW offshore wind power plant in development in the Polish Baltic Sea which it is co-developing.
Northland Power said Poland is one of its core growth markets. While much of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is also seeing heightened BESS and other energy storage development, partly funded by European Union (EU) Resilience and Recovery assistance, Poland is the standout leader.
In a recent interview, Jakub Kupcu, country director for Poland and head of origination CEE at investor Claritas Investments, said the scale of the energy storage market in Poland is “genuinely impressive.”
Energy storage securing more than 11GW of CM contracts was a “huge vote of confidence from developers and lenders alike,” Kupcu said, although the investor added that there is a huge gap between what is awarded and likely to be built in time for delivery deadlines that begin in 2028.
“Grid connection bottlenecks, permitting delays, financing gaps and a wave of “zombie projects” sitting on capacity without progress are all thinning out the pipeline between signing a contract and switching an asset on,” Kupcu said.
Meanwhile, capacity market returns have diminished in subsequent auctions. Wholesale price volatility has also “exploded,” Kupcu said. Average daily prices spreads that are multiple times higher than they were during the energy crisis are both good news for well-run assets and a sign of the market maturing and becoming more competitive, he said.
