Potential developers for a 500MW pumped hydropower energy storage facility at a reservoir in San Diego have until mid-September to respond to a request for proposals (RfP).

A 500MW energy storage facility with “5-8 hours” storage duration could be built in San Diego, California, with a local water authority seeking detailed proposals for such a project to support the grid and help integrate renewable energy.

The San Diego County Water Authority and the City of San Diego announced Wednesday that they have taken steps towards developing a new 500MW pumped energy storage project at the San Vicente Reservoir.

A dozen San Diego schools in the Poway district of San Diego, California, have taken energy storage systems from Green Charge, with 6.3MWh cumulative capacity.

AES Energy Storage, a subsidiary of AES Corporation, has signed contracts with utility San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) to install two energy storage arrays with a combined capacity of 37.5MW.
