Energy storage developer-operator Bimergen Energy has filed an application for an Option 2 Retail Electric Provider (REP) certificate in Texas, US.
Announced 26 October, the battery energy storage system (BESS) developer-operator applied for the certificate through its wholly owned subsidiary, Emergen Commodities, with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT).
Subject to regulatory approval and applicable market requirements, the REP certificate would enable Bimergen, through Emergen Commodities, to supply electricity directly to qualifying data centre customers in the state.
Texas’ Option 2 certification provides a pathway to serve specifically identified customers contracting for at least 1MW of capacity. Subject to regulatory approval and applicable market requirements, the certification would establish a foundation for Emergen Commodities to participate in this segment of the Texas retail electricity market.

Bimergen stated that supplying electricity to large data centre customers “could generate substantial revenue for Emergen Commodities and its parent company, Bimergen Energy.”
It further stated, “The significant and ongoing electricity requirements of these facilities present an opportunity to establish recurring revenue streams through customer supply agreements.”
Alongside the regulatory process, Bimergen is engaging with several counterparties to secure credit support for large data centre loads. This work is aimed at underpinning the electricity supply arrangements required to serve these types of customers and at moving forward with Bimergen’s planned retail electricity venture.
More broadly, Bimergen’s strategy centres on advancing BESS projects through development work, technology partnerships, and collaboration with capital providers.
The proposed retail electricity capability would build on that strategy, giving Bimergen additional ways to participate in the energy market and link its experience in infrastructure to electricity demand.
In 2021, US-headquartered electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla filed an REP application with the PUCT. This followed an announcement wherein the company stated its intent to connect a 100MW BESS to the grid.
In 2022, the company launched Tesla Electric, which was part of a pilot programme with the PUCT and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
In March, Bimergen acquired eight late-stage 9.9MW distributed generation BESS projects in Texas, from mobile energy solutions provider Aggreko. The According to Bimergen at the time, the projects are strategically positioned to provide essential grid stability, support renewable integration, and address accelerating power demand in ERCOT.
In May, long-duration energy storage (LDES) development and investment company Frontier Power USA (FPUSA) acquired a 480MWh BESS portfolio from Bimergen.
The portfolio included three BESS projects located in Texas, US. One project was a 100MW/400MWh BESS which the companies stated had notices-to-proceed (NTP) and was expected to begin mid-2026.
