Battery energy storage systems in Australia’s NEM are facing new operational and revenue challenges due to minimum system load events.

Modo Energy has said that revenue for BESS in Australia’s NEM fell by 7% month-on-month in January, despite revenue tripling in Queensland.

Modo Energy has said that battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) earned an average of AU$148,000/MW (US$92,810/MW) in 2024, a 45% increase year-on-year.

Modo Energy’s Wendel Hortop tells Energy-Storage.news that over 4GW of utility-scale BESS on the NEM will be in commercial operation by 2025.
