BESS developer Kyon Energy has commissioned and put into operation its 137.5MW/282MWh Alfeld BESS project in Germany, potentially the country’s largest to reach that milestone.

BESS project owners, lenders and optimisers kicked off the Energy Storage Summit Germany 2026 today in Berlin with a discussion on developing a bankable project.

Inertia could provide a strong boost to BESS project returns in Germany, but operators are still waiting for the first prequalified inverters.

If BESS are to be given restricted grid access, they should be given a commensurate reduction in the BKZ fee, Marie-Sophie Braun, head of markets & regulatory affairs for developer Kyon Energy, said.

Energy companies are accelerating battery storage deployment in Germany, with TotalEnergies and Kyon, Envision Energy and Ju:niz, and Flower announcing significant project developments and acquisitions.

That’s according to Benedikt Deuchert, head of business development and regulatory affairs for German battery energy storage system (BESS) developer and EPC firm Kyon Energy.

BayWa r.e. will manage and maintain Germany’s largest operational BESS when it comes online later this year, while Terra One has started building a smaller project in the same state. 

Power firm RWE is about to start building a 400MW/800MWh BESS project in Germany, among the largest in the country to reach the construction stage. In related news, Kyon Energy has connected a 282MWh project to the grid, possibly the largest in the country to reach that milestone.

Statkraft, Kyon Energy and Juniz Energy have progressed BESS projects in Germany, all in all totalling a combined 213MWh of capacity.

TotalEnergies is reportedly considering selling a stake of ‘about 50%’ in a portfolio of BESS projects in Germany it is deploying via Kyon Energy.
