PV inverter manufacturer Sungrow is partnering with lithium-ion battery provider and renewable energy storage system maker Samsung SDI to perform demonstrative energy storage projects in China.
Sungrow filed a statement with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on which the company is listed, saying the two companies had signed an agreement with Shanxi Guoke Energy Saving Company a state-owned company. This is not the first time the two are collaborating; in 2014 the pair announced a joint venture agreement to build and operate a battery storage plant to service the Chinese market.
Under the provision of the Guoke Energy Conservation Company, the two manufacturing giants will be joining forces on these projects to demonstrate the effect of storage on the grid when solar is added into the mix.
From demonstration projects to be located in Shanxi Province, Northern China, expected to size up to 20MW capacity with 80MWh storage, the modal will be promoted throughout the entire province if successful. The partnership is set to play on each other’s strengths; pooling on resources such as technical expertise, local grid communication and O&M.
The plan is to develop storage strategies based on grid-balancing frequency regulation and include both micro-grid and off-grid demonstrative projects. The micro-grid projects will be of no less than 100MW capacity, with 20MW / 40MWh storage. In addition, projects will include a three-tiered micro-grid structure. The systems' grids should be able to handle renewable penetration of at least 50% and prove how to increase system efficiency by 20%, according to the filing.
The projects will be mainly promoted within the Jinneng Group network and subsidiaries, state-owned by Shanxi Province, of which the Shanxi Guoke Energy Saving Company is one. The projects have the greenlight from the National Development and Reform Comission (NDRC), the country’s administrative and planning control hub. In light of this, the document said both companies are liaising with local and central government to ensure smooth execution of the upcoming demonstrations.
