Chinese EV and BESS firm BYD will supply the energy storage technology for two of IPP Greenvolt Power’s BESS projects in Poland.

The agreement, announced yesterday (3 March), will see BYD supply battery energy storage system (BESS) units for two projects that Greenvolt is building for completion in Q2 2026. Deliveries of the units will start in Q4 2025.

They are in Turośń Kościelna and Nowa Wieś Ełcka and will both have a power rating of 200MW and an energy storage capacity of 800MWh, making them 4-hour systems. Turośń Kościelna will connect to the high-voltage transmission system at the 110kV level while Nowa Wieś Ełcka will connect at the 220kV level.

Both projects were part of Greenvolt’s successful capacity market (CM) win for 2028 delivery, the auction of which ran in December 2023, where the firm won the bulk of 1.7GW awarded to BESS.

Its deputy commercial director for Europe, Jan Kloczko, discussed the wins and the market in Poland more generally with us (Premium access) at Solar Media’s Energy Storage Summit Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) 2024 in Warsaw in September.

“The contract for these two projects in Poland is the largest we have signed in Europe to date, which
clearly reflects the strategic importance we place on this technology and our ambition to remain one
of the leading players in energy storage,” commented João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group.

The firm did not give an update on the four remaining BESS projects that make up the 1.2GW that it won for 2028 delivery. Other firms have opted to sell CM-winning projects – Energy-Storage.news has asked Greenvolt for an update on the other four and will update this article if and when more information is received.

BESS has started to dominate Poland’s CM auction, including the one for 2029 delivery, to the extent that the government looks set to run further auctions with the specific aim of enabling gas plants to win (the CM was initially designed for them).

Other companies that have entered the Polish market with CM-winning projects include IPP Econergy and Ukraine-based investment firm DTEK.

BYD has gradually built up a strong position in the global energy storage market, bagging orders for some of the biggest projects in the world. That includes six totalling a staggering 15GWh in Saudi Arabia and the lion’s share of a 4.1GWh project in Chile.

The Energy Storage Summit Central Eastern Europe is set to return in September 2025 for its third edition, focusing on regional markets and the unique opportunities they present. This event will bring together key stakeholders from across the region to explore the latest trends in energy storage, with a focus on the increasing integration of energy storage into regional grids, evolving government policies, and the growing need for energy security.

The low level of the MACSE tariffs in Italy took everyone by surprise and will require careful asset management, but their relative value and those of the capacity market (CM) should increase over time.
