Engie North America has partnered with CBRE Investment Management (CBRE IM) on a 2.4GW battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio in Texas and California, US.

The portfolio consists of 31 battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, and Engie says it is one of the largest sales completed to date.

According to Engie, the 31 projects are in operation, and will support grid resilience in both states. Engie will retain a controlling share in the 2.4GW portfolio, operating and managing the assets.

Some of them may well be projects Engie acquired via its acquisition of the BESS portfolio of developer Broad Reach Power, completed in 2023.

Earlier this month, Energy-Storage.news reported that Engie had reached a key permitting milestone in the California Energy Commission’s (CEC’s) Opt-In Certification Program regarding a 1GWh BESS project in the state.

Based in Houston, Texas, the company is targeting 95GW of renewables and energy storage in operation globally by 2030.

According to its official website, Engie has three grid-scale energy storage projects in North America totalling 520MW of capacity, with another 2GW under construction.

The company is also active outside the US. Recently, the company started construction on a 100MW/400MWh BESS in Belgium with system integrator NHOA Energy.

In 2024, the company signed an ‘energy storage as a service’ contract with Energy Dome for its long-duration energy storage (LDES) project in Italy, and it is also building large-scale BESS in Chile.

Engie says that its 2.4GW portfolio will support its North America strategy by recycling capital and adding a ‘globally recognised’ investor to its pool of partners.

The company has been very active, just days before acquiring this portfolio, Engie also announced it entered into a preliminary agreement with Cipher Mining to use wind power at a Cipher data centre in Texas. Engie says that once executed, the agreement would allow Cipher to purchase up to 300MW of clean energy from one of ENGIE’s wind facilities.
