Commercial operation has started on the 100MW/331MWh Bramley battery energy storage system (BESS), a project in the UK deployed by owner-operator BW ESS, developer Penso Power and BESS provider Sungrow.
“This is a landmark moment for BW ESS’ UK rollout and a notable project in the context of the UK’s energy transition,” said Erik Strømsø, CEO of BW ESS, a speaker at this week’s Energy Storage Summit EU 2025 in London.
The 3.3-hour duration project uses Sungrow’s Power Titan 2.0 AC block solution and is the largest online in the UK, and most likely the largest in Europe. It is connected to the grid via a loop-in and loop-out Extra High Voltage (EHV) solution, Sungrow said.
It is also notable as having one of the longest-term tolling agreements for a large-scale BESS in the UK at seven years, with oil and gas major Shell, as well as being one of the earliest such deals signed in the country’s energy storage market.

Roberto Jimenez, BW ESS executive director, discussed that deal and the wider picture for battery storage offtake contracting in an interview with ESN Premium in August last year shortly after its announcement.
Some 17GWh of BESS is due to connect to the UK grid this year, our colleagues at Solar Media Market Research wrote in a guest blog yesterday.
