Energy storage developer-operator Aypa Power and utility Salt River Project (SRP) have brought the 250MW/1,000MWh Pediment energy storage project online in Mesa, Arizona.
Announced 16 June, the battery energy storage system (BESS) is located in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor in Mesa.
Aypa Power acquired the Pediment project from independent power producer (IPP) Eolian in 2024, marking the first of two contracted projects with SRP and, it claims, a significant addition to the utility’s expanding energy storage portfolio.
The company is also developing a second 250MW/2,000MWh lithium-ion BESS for SRP, scheduled to begin operations in December 2028.

Aypa announced the successful close of a US$398 million financing package for the Pediment BESS in December 2024. French bank Société Générale led the financing group with ING Capital and Bank of America as coordinating lead arrangers.
According to SRP, Pediment created over 200 construction jobs and is expected to deliver over US$16 million in direct economic impact, including US$14 million in property tax revenue to Maricopa County, Arizona during its first 20 years of operation.
Earlier this year, Aypa closed a US$1.5 billion construction warehouse revolving credit facility to advance its US projects. The credit facility featured an extra US$500 million accordion feature.
The company hailed it as a “first-of-its-kind transaction” and the largest warehouse financing for a storage-focused IPP. It also said the facility would be the company’s main funding source for projects expected to become operational through 2028.
Shortly after, the company closed a US$500 million upsizing of the US$1.5 billion credit facility.
SRP has been active this month. On 9 June, the utility and EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) announced the completion of the 200MW/800MWh Flatland Energy Storage BESS project.
Earlier this week, on 15 June, SRP and carbon dioxide-based long-duration energy storage (LDES) company Energy Dome announced a 19MW/190MWh ESS project in St. Johns, Arizona.
The project was selected through a request for proposals (RFP) for LDES pilots issued by SRP in 2024 and part of tech giant Google and SRP’s collaboration to accelerate deployment of non-lithium-ion LDES technologies.
