Argentina has received more than 1.3GW of energy storage applications for its first battery energy storage system (BESS) tender.

The volume submitted for the AlmaGBA scheme is more than twice the available capacity, as the wholesale market operator CAMMESA (Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico Sociedad Anónima) is seeking to add 500MW of BESS in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires through what is the country’s first BESS tender.

In total, 27 projects – from 15 different companies – have been presented in the tender. The BESS capacity will be connected through different nodes overseen by utilities Edenor and Edesur. There has been a total of 17 projects that aim to connect the node overseen by Edenor, which represents 900MW of capacity. The remaining 447MW of BESS would connect to nodes overseen by utility Edesur.

The size of the projects’ maximum output varies from 10MW to 150MW, with three projects at the upper end: MSU BESS Matheu, MSU BESS Alte. Brown and PA NUEVO PUERTO.

Three Argentinian renewables companies – Genneia, Rowing and Sullair Argentina – have submitted the most projects, with four each for a combined of 170MW, 102.9MW and 144MW BESS, respectively.

However, with two 150MW BESS projects and a third one with 30MW BESS, Argentinian developer MSU Green Energy is the company with the highest volume applied in the tender.

The full list of projects and companies participating in the first BESS tender can be accessed here (in Spanish).

The AlmaGBA tender was launched in February with the publication from CAMESSA of its details, while results of the awarded projects are expected to be published in August 2025 with contracts set to be signed the following month.

The growth of BESS in the region and in the Caribbean has been going slowly due to a lack of regulation and policy. Auctions and tenders such as this one in Argentina, or ones in Brazil and Honduras, will help give a boost to the technology. Chile has been the leading country in terms of BESS growth with more than 1GW of installed output already.
