The news was welcomed by Brazilian trade association Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Storage Solutions (ABSAE) and considered the announcement as a “significant progress”.

Regarding the launch of the BESS auction in 2025, the Brazilian minister, Alexandre Silveira de Oliveira, said: “The purpose of the battery auction is to boost battery technology in Brazil and try to bring Huawei and other large battery producers, mainly from China and other countries, to be able to bring technology to Brazil.”

The launch of a dedicated BESS auction in Brazil could help boost the growth of the technology in the country and further enhance the use of renewables such as solar PV and wind.

Despite being the largest solar PV market in South America, with over 47GW of capacity installed – as of August 2024 – according to solar trade body Absolar, Brazil lags behind Chile when it comes to energy storage.

Since Chile passed a major energy storage bill, gigawatts of energy storage co-located with solar PV are being built in the country. Earlier this year the country opened a public land bidding auction seeking 13GWh of standalone energy storage projects across four regions – Arica and Parinacota, Tarapaca, Antofagasta and Atacama.

The last grid-scale BESS that Energy-Storage.news reported on in Brazil was a 30M/60MWh non-wires alternative (NWA) project from transmission system operator (TSO) ISA CTEEP.

Energy-Storage.news’ publisher Solar Media will host the 3rd annual Energy Storage Summit Latin America in Santiago, Chile, 15-16 October 2024. This year’s events bring together Latin America’s leading investors, policymakers, developers, utilities, network operators, EPCs and more all in one place to discuss the landscape of energy storage in the region. Visit the official site for more info.
