Argentina has awarded 667MW BESS in its first energy storage tender

Argentina has awarded 667MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) in its first tender under the AlmaGBA scheme.

Nearly half of the volume submitted for the tender (1.3GW) has been awarded by the wholesale market operator CAMMESA (Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico Sociedad Anónima). This is also slightly above the initial capacity sought for the tender, which was set at 500MW.

The AlmaGBA tender aims to secure capacity for utilities Edenor and Edesur in the capital, Buenos Aires.

The awarded projects from the first Argentinian BESS tender are expected to begin commercial operations in the next 12 to 18 months. According to the Argentinian government, the investment in the BESS projects will surpass US$540 million.

The AlmaGBA tender was launched in February, with CAMESSA publishing last week the details for the awarded projects, including prices. The lowest price awarded was US$10,161/MW/month, while the highest price awarded was US$12,815/MW/month.

Most of the capacity awarded in the tender will be contracted through Edenor, with seven projects for a combined 500MW, while Edesur has contracted three projects for a combined 167MW.

Moreover, five projects—with a combined 222MW output—that have not been selected due to their price offer have been invited to improve their offer with the utilities at US$12,591/MWh/month.
