The 300MW/1,200MWh Stanwell battery energy storage system (BESS) in Queensland, Australia, has reached its halfway construction milestone with the final Tesla Megapack units now delivered to the site.

A total of 324 eight-metre-long, 38-tonne Tesla Megapack 2XL units have been transported 660km from Brisbane to the Stanwell Power Station site near Rockhampton in Central Queensland.

“We were up bright and early to witness the final megapacks of the Stanwell Battery project roll in, which means we’re now at the halfway mark,” Stanwell Corporation noted on LinkedIn.

Energy-Storage.news has documented the battery storage system’s progress since the project began construction in August 2024. The system features Tesla Megapack 2XL units, which started arriving at the site in March 2025.

With a 4-hour duration, the Stanwell BESS represents a cornerstone project in Queensland’s energy transition strategy and will be one of the state’s largest BESS projects once it becomes operational.

According to Stanwell, the project is scheduled to begin commissioning in November 2025, with full commercial operations expected by mid-2027.

Once complete, the BESS will provide essential grid services including energy arbitrage, frequency control ancillary services (FCAS), and capacity firming for the state’s growing renewable energy portfolio.

The AU$747 million (US$486 million) project forms part of Queensland’s broader strategy to transform existing coal-fired power station sites into Clean Energy Hubs.

Yurika, a Queensland government-owned company, is installing the Stanwell BESS, and several local contractors are involved in the construction process.

Stanwell’s expanding battery energy storage portfolio

The Stanwell BESS is not the only battery storage project in Stanwell Corporation’s growing energy storage portfolio. The company is also developing the Tarong BESS, a 300MW/600MWh project located at the Tarong Power Station near Nanango in Southern Queensland.

Construction of the Tarong BESS began in August 2023. The project is being delivered in two stages and will utilise 164 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, also installed by Yurika.

In addition to these owned assets, Stanwell Corporation recently secured a 15-year capacity purchase agreement with Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners for 100% of the stored energy from Stage 3 of the Supernode Battery Energy Storage Project in Brendale, north of Brisbane.

This agreement will add 250MW/1,010MWh of firmed energy to Stanwell’s portfolio, bringing its total committed energy storage capacity to 2.8GWh by 2027.

The Supernode BESS is strategically located next to the central node of the Queensland transmission network at the South Pine substation, where approximately 80% of the state’s electricity flows daily.

The project forms part of a larger AU$2.5 billion ‘green data’ centre development powered by renewables and battery energy storage.
