
Energy companies are accelerating battery storage deployment in Romania, with Aukera, ENEVO Group and Kraftfeld Energy, and PPC Renewables Romania announcing significant project developments.
Aukera announces financial close on phase two of Gura Ialomitei BESS
Pan-European battery storage and renewables platform Aukera has announced financial close on a €48.5 million (US$55.3 million) financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, for the second phase of the Gura Ialomitei Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Romania.
Announced 21 July, Aukera said the financing will support construction of the remaining 100MW/200MWh of capacity, completing Aukera’s flagship 250MW/500MWh Gura Ialomitei project, which is expected to become Romania’s largest operational BESS facility and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe.
The financing builds on the 15 June news of Aukera’s successful delivery of Phase One, 150MW/300MWh, which secured a US$68 million debt facility from Kommunalkredit Austria AG in November 2025 and reached commercial operation in June 2026. Phase two is expected to enter commercial operation by early 2027.

Last month, Aukera reached financial close on the 170MW/340MWh Project Volt BESS in La Louvière, Belgium, developed in a joint venture (JV) with Weerts Group.
Recently, Romania has become one of Europe’s most active BESS markets. Activity has accelerated with gigawatt-level announcements, led by Enery’s US$530 million financing for its 761MWp solar and 1GWh-plus BESS Ogrezeni project, set to become one of Europe’s largest hybrid projects.
Deployments are driven by falling battery prices, growing investor confidence, and country-specific factors. Romania’s expanding solar capacity has created a pronounced duck curve, with daytime solar pushing midday prices down and creating evening ramping requirements, the same dynamics driving gigawatt-scale storage in California and Australia.
The regulatory environment now supports storage through accelerated grid connections for renewable-plus-storage projects and elimination of double taxation via exemptions from transmission tariffs and green certificate requirements.
Additionally, both Bulgaria and Romania have allocated Recovery and Resilience funding to gigawatts of storage. Eurowind Energy’s 116MWh BESS at Teiuș solar park received US$24 million under Romania’s EU National Recovery and Resilience Plan allocation.
ENEVO Group and Kraftfeld Energy sign 220MWh BESS construction contract
Romanian energy solutions provider ENEVO Group and developer Kraftfeld Energy have signed a contract for the construction of a 110MW/220MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Drăgănești-Olt, Olt County, Romania.
Announced 25 June, the contract, which includes connection to Romania’s grid, was signed at Intersolar Europe 2026. Kraftfeld Energy is the project’s owner, with ENEVO Group acting as main EPC contractor, responsible for the turnkey design, procurement and construction of the BESS and the associated high-voltage substation.
Construction is scheduled to begin in Q3 2026, with commissioning and commercial operation planned for early 2027.
ENEVO said the project strengthens its position as an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner for utility-scale battery storage in Romania, “adding to a portfolio that now stands over 1GWh of storage projects in execution or already in operation.”
In March, Chinese-based OEM Sungrow signed an agreement with ENEVO to supply 1GWh of BESS across multiple projects located in Romania. The first tranche comprises 440MWh of projects ordered earlier this year, scheduled for delivery before December 2026. The second phase will add an additional 560MWh, bringing the total capacity to over 1GWh once all projects are completed.
In April, Kraftfeld Energy and investor Alfi Green Energy Fund closed a transaction to establish a 65:35% JV developing a 126MW solar, 200MWh BESS project in Romania. Commercial operations are expected to begin at the start of 2027.
PPC Renewables Romania building 80MWh BESS within Corugea wind farm
PPC Renewables Romania, part of the Greek state-owned Public Power Corporation (PPC) will build a 40.08MW/80.16MWh BESS within the Corugea wind farm (CEE Corugea).
According to PPC the project amounts to a total value of RON87.4 million (US$19.04 million), of which US$2.1 million is European co-financing, through the Modernisation Fund.
Located in the South-East region, in the town of Casimcea, the Corugea wind farm, where the BESS will be located, includes 35 turbines, with a total installed capacity of 70MW.
The farm produces approximately 190,000MWh annually and contributes to the avoidance of over 130,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
In addition to implementing the BESS, the project involves the construction of the necessary infrastructure elements, the arrangement of exploitation, access and fencing roads, the implementation of safety lighting and monitoring systems, as well as the area arranged for operation, maintenance, security and site organisation.
The project is financed by the Modernisation Fund, which supports investments in the development of batteries connected to an existing renewable energy production facility.
The investment amounts to a total value of approximately US$19 million. The maximum value insured from the Modernisation Fund is 11.41% of the total value of the project, namely US$21 million, and the value insured by PPC Renewables Romania is US$17 million.
PPC stated that the project continues its strategy of accelerating the company’s energy storage and renewables portfolio, “with storage projects that can actively contribute to system stability, through the predictable production profile provided by battery storage.”
Earlier this year, PPC announced plans to install a 60.12MWh BESS at its Sălbatica 1 wind farm, which would also be supported by the Modernisation Fund.
