State-owned power generator and distributor PGE has launched a tender for the construction of a 2-hour BESS project in Poland.

The company launched a tender for the design and construction of a 400MW/800MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Gryfino last week (7 August).

The project will be implemented at company’s Dolna Odra Power Plant in Nowe Czarnowo near the town of Gryfino, northwestern Poland.

It is the second large-scale BESS that the company has progressed recently, both part of huge plans to deploy 10GWh of new energy storage resources bringing its total capacity to 17GWh by 2035. The first project, Żarnowiec, will be provided by LG Energy Solution via a turnkey solution comprising BESS and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), with the BESS locally manufactured.

Both are expected to be operational by 2029 and have secured 17-year capacity market (CM) contracts. The CM is the bedrock of the business case for large-scale BESS in Poland, providing long-term guaranteed income which substantially increases project bankability.

The tender documents are available here. The deadline for offers is 16 September, 2025.

Poland is expected to lead BESS deployments in the Central and Eastern European region in the coming years, with the CM and a €1 billion capex grant programme helping to kickstart the market.
