Developer Pacific Energy has been awarded a contract by Territory Generation to deliver 33.5MW/81MWh utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the Alice Springs and Darwin-Katherine power systems in Australia’s Northern Territory.

The deal is the next stage of Territory Generation’s Battery Energy Storage System Program, designed to enhance grid stability and enable higher solar penetration across the Territory’s isolated power networks.

Pacific Energy will design, manufacture, supply, install and integrate the battery storage systems at Territory Generation’s power stations in Alice Springs and Katherine, backed by a 10-year service support agreement delivered by the company’s locally based team established in Darwin in 2022.

The battery storage systems will provide essential frequency and voltage control services across both power systems.

In Alice Springs, the BESS will also facilitate energy shifting to support system stability and capacity management during both minimum and peak demand periods, addressing operational challenges arising in isolated grids with increasing renewable energy penetration.

Pacific Energy CEO Mike Hall described the contract as reflecting both the Northern Territory’s renewable energy ambitions and the company’s expanding capabilities in complex grid infrastructure.

“This award signals an exciting new chapter for Pacific Energy in the Northern Territory, and for our long-term partnership with Territory Generation. The Battery Energy Storage System Program is one of the most technically significant BESS projects we have undertaken, and it represents a real vote of confidence in our capability to deliver resilient, grid-stabilising solutions at scale,” Hall said.

The Northern Territory BESS projects will be delivered with key technology partners, including ABB for inverter systems and Chinese battery manufacturer Narada for battery supply.

The project builds on Pacific Energy’s previous battery storage integration work supporting Territory Generation, including programming and integration support for the first Darwin-Katherine BESS, a 35MW/35MWh battery storage system equipped with grid-forming inverters.

The Territory Generation contract extends Pacific Energy’s track record in delivering renewable energy and storage solutions for isolated power systems across Australia.

The company previously claimed to have delivered Australia’s first off-grid solar-plus-storage plant to power a New South Wales mine. The 26MW solar-plus-storage site includes a 3MW/6MWh BESS and powers the Atlas-Campaspe mine, owned by the American chemical company Tronox.

Last year, Pacific Energy completed a 61MW solar-wind hybrid installation to power a Western Australian gold mine. This includes a 13MW grid-forming BESS.

It is worth noting that Pacific Energy received major financial backing in 2025 to help spearhead its renewables and energy storage pipeline.

As reported by our sister site, PV Tech, Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), one of Australia’s largest infrastructure fund managers, completed an AU$2 billion (US$1.29 billion) refinancing and equity raise for Pacific Energy.
