IPP Grenergy has entered into a long-term toll with an ‘investment grade’ international utility for a solar PV co-located BESS of 680MWh in Spain.

The 12-year toll covers the battery energy storage system (BESS) portion of its Escuderos hybrid solar and storage project in Castilla-La Mancha, which features 200MW of solar PV.

Construction on the BESS will start this year for a 2027 operation date, and the toll starts in July 2028. Power firm Galp meanwhile has been the offtaker for the solar portion since 2020.

It is Grenergy’s second BESS toll in Spain following a 10-year agreement for its standalone 150MW/600MWh Oviedo project, announced in February (also with an unnamed offtaker). Oviedo is being developed by its European standalone storage platform Greenbox.

Grenergy said that the Escuderos project replicates its model in Chile, where it is developing, securing offtake for and selling (in stages) two huge solar-plus-storage sites called Oasis de Atacama (11GWh) and Oasis Central (4GWh).

“We see enormous potential in the Spanish market to continue developing a hybrid portfolio, building on the experience and track record we have already established in Chile with the Oasis platforms,” said David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy.

Spain is generally agreed to be a very strong long-term market for energy storage with high solar PV penetration enabling a business case around load shifting, but most sources also say the regulatory landscape is far from complete. Nonetheless, the large-scale project space has progressed rapidly in the past year.

Power firm Iberdrola commissioned what it said was the country’s largest BESS projects in January at 30MW/60MW each while Zelestra, Engie and BRUC have all finalised plans to deploy much larger projects. At the earlier stage, developers Return and FRV bought and revealed (respectively) large-scale pipelines.

Zelestra, an IPP, has pioneered the BESS offtake space in Spain, signing what was agreed to be the first PPA in Spain involving a large-scale BESS in July 2025. Zelestra chief product officer Stefano Breda discussed the deal with Energy-Storage.news shortly after (subscription required).
