EVLO, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, has had success with BESS projects in Canada in Europe. In 2023, the company was selected to provide a 60MWh BESS in Ontario.
The California BESS is comprised of 64 EVLO 1000 units and 16 power conversion system (PCS) units. EVLO’s proprietary energy management system (EMS), EVLOGIX will manage the project.
Its 5-hour duration is notable since most BESS projects in California are 4-hour systems.
Energy-Storage.news spoke with a representative for EVLO who verified that the EVLO 1000 units are separate storage solutions from both EVLOFLEX and EVLO SYNERGY, its latest-generation products.
While the company’s website does not contain details about the EVLO 1000, a 2021 announcement from Hydro-Québec states that “EVLO 1000 is a 1-MWh battery energy storage system designed for large-scale projects.”
“Aimed mainly at electricity generators, transmission providers and distributors, the system has varied applications, including renewable-energy integration, microgrids, peak shaving, backup power and grid resilience.”
Details about the CCA have not been released at the time of publication, however, EVLO’s President and CEO, Sonia St-Arnaud, did say that the end customer had “very stringent requirements in terms of safety and cyber security.”
Affirmed by St-Arnaud and evidenced by the deal, the customer’s requirements for the project were met.
In November, EVLO’s EVOFLEX configurable BESS was recertified for the UL9540 standard as requested by Virginia utility Dominion Energy.
California, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce anthropogenic emissions 85% below 1990 levels by 2045, has seen a myriad of BESS projects recently.
Developer Strata Clean Energy completed the 70MW/280MWh Inland Empire Storage Project in early December, and Fengate Asset Management in collaboration with Alpha Omega Power closed a tax equity commitment with US Bancorp Impact Finance for the 400MWh Caballero energy storage project in late November.
EVLO’s first US project was the 3MW/12MWh BESS commissioned in August, in Troy, Vermont with a 20-year long-term service agreement with Vermont utilities including Vermont Electric Cooperative. The Vermont BESS is also comprised of 16 EVLO 1000 units with four PCS platforms.
This article has been updated from its original version to reflect inaccurate information originally provided to Energy-Storage.news stating that the EVLO BESS units were 12MW/64MWh, creating a 5.3 hour duration.
