This session was intended for engineers and other decision makers in the BESS manufacturing industry focused on designing systems that maximized energy density while ensuring safety and manufacturing efficiency. Attendees learned how pressure-sensitive-adhesive (PSA) tape solutions could help them achieve those ends. The session was presented by Argent, a premier US-based precision die-cut converter, and Avery Dennison, a leading global manufacturer of high-performance PSA tapes.

PSA tape solutions can be used to enhance flame retardancy, add dielectric strength, reduce NVH, and bond materials. They have a long track record of success in demanding industries such as automotive, aerospace, transportation, electronic, medical, and more. And they have significant potential to address these challenges in BESS applications.

The session started with an overview of PSA tape fundamentals — including adhesive formulation, facestocks and conversion processes. Next, it explored how BESS engineers could collaborate with the PSA tape value chain to develop customized material solutions for challenges such as thermal runaway prevention, electrical insulation, and bonding and sealing.

The session then provided greater detail regarding BESS-specific applications for PSA tapes, including ways the technology could be used to bond heat shielding and thermal runaway mitigation materials, enhance cell venting systems, create electrically insulative barriers, prevent exposure to the environment, and manage wiring, all while improving manufacturing efficiency. Use-case examples highlighted how anisotropic tapes function to enable directional venting, and how custom liner configurations optimize design for manufacturing (DFM) by integrating with automated assembly lines.

Attendees left with working knowledge of PSA tape technology, an understanding of BESS applications for tapes, and a clear framework for taking a BESS/PSA-tape project from initial concept and prototype testing through to seamless, scaled, domestic and global production.

Learning Objectives:
