Independent power producer (IPP) Opdenergy has closed a US$227 million financing for its operating renewable energy portfolio in Chile.
Announced 7 July, the financing was lead by Japanese multinational financial institution Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), international bank BNP Paribas, and Spanish public bank Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO).
The US$227 million is linked to a portfolio of renewable energy assets, including the 104MW Sol de Los Andes Solar plant, the 90MW/513MWh Sol de los Andes battery energy storage system (BESS) located in the Atacama region, the 50MW La Estrella Wind farm in the O’Higgins region and a 17MW solar portfolio located in the Valparaiso region.
Opdenergy Chile, which launched operations in 2014, has established a significant footprint in the country’s energy market.

Beyond its current 371MW of operating capacity, the company claims to maintain a diversified 748MW pipeline of projects scheduled to break ground within the coming year.
This portfolio includes the 95MW Dañicalqui and 132MW Vientos del Lago wind facilities in the southern Ñuble and Los Lagos regions, the 235MW Don Carlos solar installation in the Atacama Region, and two energy storage projects: the 196MW/1.2GWh Don Carlos BESS in Atacama and the 90MW/500MWh Alcones BESS in O’Higgins.
Opdenergy received environmental approval for the Don Carlos project in 2025. The BESS portion will be located next to the Don Carlos PV plant substation and is expected to begin operations in June 2027.
In 2021, Chile held a power auction, which was eight times oversubscribed and saw the country supporting 2GW of renewables and BESS projects. Opdenergy was among the successful bidders.
Recently, IPP Grenergy signed a 1TWh night-time power purchase agreement (PPA) for its 3.5GWh Elena BESS project in Chile.
Elena is part of Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama complex, which co-locates BESS and solar PV generation at a multi-GW and multi-GWh scale.
Chile is experiencing a particularly strong year for renewables project commissioning. Research firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence reported in its May monthly analysis that ContourGlobal activated a 231MW solar facility paired with a 1.3GWh BESS in the Tarapacá region during May.
June’s deployment figures will be even more substantial, with Grenergy inaugurating the Oasis de Atacama complex.
