RES storage system chosen for NREL testing

A 1MW/1MWh energy storage system from system integrator Renewable Energy Systems (RES) has been selected for testing by the US Energy Department.

A test project at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) will involve one of the company’s RESolve storage systems, which is due to be completed next month.

NREL research staff will use the multiple applications of the RESolve system to test frequency regulation and renewable energy integration as well as grid-to-island transition.

LG Chem is supplying the battery and SMA will provide the power conversion system (PCS) unit, while Siemens is to install the pad mount transformer.

RES has projects completed or under way in eight electricity markets using six battery technologies with multiple utility and IPP clients. Last year it completed work on its first utility-scale battery-based energy storage system in the UK, at a solar farm owned by British Solar Renewables (BSR).
