The latest edition of PV Tech Power, Solar Media’s quarterly technical journal for the downstream solar PV industry, is now available online, including ‘Storage & Smart Power’, a dedicated section brought to you by the team here at Energy-Storage.news.
The main magazine leads with ‘2019: The solar briefing’, looking back on an eventful year, with the US establishing its trade tariffs on module imports and China hitting the brakes on deployment. Yet you can read in full how through sheer determination, everyone ended the year feeling fairly optimistic.
Elsewhere, you’ll find feature articles and technical papers on a range of topics, from our editorial teams here at Solar Media, industry contributors and experts. From how falling costs are making solar the energy source of choice in the desert, the hurdles facing bifacial PV module technology and deployment, a close look at Benban, a 1.6GW solar park in Egypt and lots more.
Following our trip to Solar Power International / Energy Storage International in the US earlier this year, this quarterly edition of ‘Storage & Smart Power’ includes ‘Is California dreaming? Energy storage’s role in reaching 100% renewables’, my attempt to grasp the implications of the state’s target to reach 100% carbon-free retail electricity by 2045. We spoke with the likes of commercial and industrial (C&I) intelligent energy storage provider Stem Inc, thermal storage company Ice Energy, Sonnen, NEC Energy Solutions and more about what it will take: for example, why homebuilders and architects might be almost as important as policymakers and utilities in the medium term future.
Following that up, we were able to speak with Janice Lin of the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA) about the policy, SB100. We talk about storage with and without solar, why raising the value of behind-the-meter storage will be a big part of SB100 - and a big part of decarbonisation plans in other territories too - and why the Duck Curve is starting to look more 'saw-toothed monster' than duck. Janice Lin has been instrumental on so many levels to the success of energy storage so far, not just in California but in the wider US and internationally, so the feature interview, 'Accelerating to 100%', should be a fascinating read.
We’ve heard time and again that energy storage software will be the defining component in determining the success of new business models that enable the full value of flexible and resilient power to be realised. One company that is producing software for modelling energy storage systems and the economic case behind them is Pason Power and we were able to ask Enrico Ladendorf and Bryce Evans from the company to write ‘The smarts behind the storage’, which rounds off ‘Storage & Smart Power’ this time out.
So much to look back on and yet so much to look forward to. You can get your free PDF copy of PV Tech Power as a download from this link, while we will once again be hosting individual ‘Storage & Smart Power’ technical papers as downloadable content on the Energy-Storage.news ‘Resources’ page, here.
