Energy storage systems integration company LS Energy Solutions has appoined Steve Fludder, former head of NEC Corporation’s Energy Solutions division, as its new chief executive officer (CEO).

Fludder had lead NEC Energy Solutions, for three years between 2017 and 2020, but despite delivering 986MW of battery energy storage globally, the Massachusetts-headquartered subsidiary of the Japanese electronics giant is now winding down its business activities. Prior to NEC, Steve Fludder held roles at other major energy and technology players including GE and Samsung Engineering.

The CEO now joins North Carolina-headquartered LS Energy Solutions, which is in turn a subsidiary of LS ELECTRIC, part of the South Korean conglomerate LS Group. LS Energy Solutions claims to have also delivered more than 900MW of energy storage projects worldwide to date, including projects carried out over more than 10 years in the company’s former guise as the grid-tied energy division of Parker Hannifin, before that was acquired by LS ELECTRIC in 2018 and rebranded.

Like NEC, Fludder’s new company specialised in lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, and like NEC ES, is able to either source batteries for customers or incorporate batteries sourced by others, having integrated more than 15 different technologies into its 250+ projects to date.

LS Energy Solutions said this includes advanced lithium-ion, flow batteries, ultracapacitors, flywheels, fuel cells and more and that the company is able to provide optimised energy storage solutions for “virtually any energy storage use-case,” including front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter projects ranging from small-scale to multiple megawatts.

The company also touts more than 40 years of experience in advanced inverter technology as well as the fact that it has the backing of LS Group, which generates US$25 billion total revenues, as strengths.

Also joining Steve Fludder at LS Energy Solutions will be another familiar name from NEC, Roger Lin. Lin was VP of marketing at NEC Energy Solutions and now becomes VP of marketing and strategy in his new role. Roger Lin was at NEC’s predecessor company, A123 Systems before that was acquired by the Japanese corporation and has over 15 years in battery tech, products and applications, speaking often with the team at Energy-Storage.news on topics including fire safety, market design and regulations.

"I am honored and excited to lead LS Energy Solutions, and I’m confident that the company will soon be one of the leading players in the market," Steve Fludder said.

"We are looking to establish the company’s presence in the Boston area, in addition to the Charlotte, NC location, to attract technical talent from MIT and the greater Boston innovation hub to set us up for long term success".
