Independent power producer (IPP) Clearway Energy has added 210MW of energy storage capacity to its Honeycomb Energy Centre fleet in Southern Utah, US.

Announced 9 October, the additional battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity is supported by long-term contracts with utility PacifiCorp and increases the portfolio’s combined capacity to 2,120MWh.

The new contracts enable three new BESS facilities to advance the second phase of the Honeycomb Energy Centre.

Clearway brought the first four Honeycomb energy storage sites online in May, holding a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the occasion.

Each 80MW BESS installation is located adjacent to an operating Clearway solar site, also under contract with PacifiCorp.

Clearway claims Honeycomb represents an approximately US$600 million investment in Utah’s electric infrastructure, with equipment from Tesla and domestic steel.

In March 2025, Clearway closed a US$605 million financing for the Honeycomb portfolio, which was led by a consortium consisting of KeyBanc Capital Markets, CoBank ACB, DNB Bank ASA, New York Branch, US Bancorp Impact Finance), National Australia Bank Limited, Bank of America, National Association and Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale, New York Branch.

Clearway partnered with electrical contracting company Rosendin on construction, which claimed it will create at least 150 jobs, support Beaver and Iron counties’ public services with US$37 million in additional tax revenue during operations and contribute an additional US$60,000 in annual donations to Utah schools and community organisations, for a total of US$100,000 each year from the seven sites.

Also announced in May, Clearway’s 400MW/3,200MWh Potentia-Viridi BESS was approved through the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Opt-In Certification Programme.

In June, renewables developer rPlus Energies announced start of commercial operations for the 400MW/1,600MWh Green River Energy Centre in Emery County, Utah.

Clearway was also active in Texas this year, having brought online the 300MW solar PV and 200MW BESS Pine Forest Energy Centre in Hopkins County, Texas, in February.
