The company, which employs 250 workers worldwide, received the award due to the success of its smart storage system — ‘sonnenBatterie’ — which stores the excess solar energy of a residential PV system and releases it when it is needed. By utilising the sonnenBatterie, a household can become self-sufficient when it comes to generating energy.
Sonnen was not the only company to take home an award Monday, as GE also captured a Zayed Future Energy Prize in the large corporation category due in large part to the Ecomagination Initiative — a programme that strives to solve energy efficiency and water problems, address sustainability issues, and limit the climate change effects of many of its devices, products and services.
