The Q3 2024 edition of our downstream solar PV and energy storage journal, PV Tech Power, is now available to download. Volume 40 leads with a focus on the US grid, and what can be done to reform an ageing grid burdened by a weight of connection requests.

The latest figures suggest that around 3TW of electricity generation capacity was awaiting connection to US grid systems as of the end of 2023, and solar is a key contributor to this backlog, with around one 1TW of solar capacity awaiting grid connections.

Our cover feature in this edition of PV Tech Power examines options to upgrade and reform the US grid. These include learning from the successes of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), where grid connection times are up to a year lower than in other parts of the US; and assessing the proposed reforms of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

As always, ‘Storage & Smart Power’, the section of the journal contributed by our team at Energy-Storage.news, returns.

‘Storage & Smart Power articles in this edition:

  • Beyond the spark: Insuring battery storage

Fire safety has become a key consideration in the burgeoning battery energy storage industry. Adam Shinn, Michael Cosgrave and Ross Kiddie report on efforts to mitigate the risks of thermal runaway and the future of BESS insurance.

  • Overcoming implementation challenges as European policymakers embrace energy storage

Recognition of the role energy storage must play in Europe’s energy transition has been long overdue. Now that it has arrived, the hard work begins, write Julian Jansen and Lars Stephan of Fluence.

  • Reducing risk in battery procurement for large energy storage projects in the US

In the rapidly growing but still relatively new battery energy storage sector, the procurement and integration of equipment for large projects presents numerous risks. Jared Spence of IHI Terrasun explores some of the steps developers should follow to reduce exposure.
