United Arab Emirates (UAE) state-owned renewables company Masdar has partnered with Germany’s Luxcara for battery storage and wind energy projects.
Clean energy asset manager Luxcara announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday (11 September).
The two parties will explore the potential investment of more than €5 billion (US$5.77 billion) in battery energy storage systems (BESS), offshore wind and other technologies, beginning with projects in Germany.
The MoU was announced during a UAE state visit to Germany. Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi described Germany and Europe as “an important strategic market for Masdar, where we have built a strong track record across offshore wind and other renewable technologies.”

Luxcara managing partner Alexandra von Bernstorff said the partnership with Masdar “could bring meaningful investment into Germany’s offshore wind and battery storage sector.”
Luxcara acquires, structures, finances and operates energy projects with investments across 12 European countries that comprise the full energy transition value chain from generation and integration to storage.
The company, founded in 2009, first featured on Energy-Storage.news in 2025 with the acquisition of a 520MW/1,040MWh BESS project near Dortmund, with a grid connection already secured and planned as part of a 900MW/1,800MWh battery park complex in Waltrop, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Waltrop battery park project’s shareholders, Luxcara, power firm BKW and utility group Trianel, secured key infrastructure approvals for the project in July, allowing it to move toward construction, beginning this autumn, with commissioning in 2028.
Partner Masdar, meanwhile, invests in, develops and operates renewable energy projects worldwide, with an operating portfolio of more than 65GW across all technologies.
In the UAE, it is currently working on what is considered the world’s largest 24/7 dispatchable solar-plus-storage site, pairing 5.2GW of solar PV generation with 19GWh of battery storage to create a 1GW ‘round-the-clock’ solution.
It has many battery storage projects under construction, operation or development, including the UK, where it commissioned its first in December 2025 and last month raised financing for three projects totalling 540MWh and commissioned one other 70MWh project.
In February, Masdar entered a partnership with RWE to create a joint venture (JV) targeting 1GW of BESS investments in Germany.
Energy Storage Summit Germany, a dedicated, standalone conference focused entirely on the German market, takes place 15-16 September 2026 at Leonardo Royal Hotel Berlin Alexanderplatz, Berlin.
