Invinity sells 43MWh long-duration flow battery system to US Midwest rural electric cooperative

Flow battery company Invinity Energy Systems has sold 43MWh of battery systems to utility Dairyland Power Cooperative for deployment across long duration energy storage (LDES) projects in the US Midwest.

Announced 3 August the project forms part of the Rural Energy Viability for Integrated Vital Energy (REVIVE) programme which is being supported by funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE), which Invinity previously announced in September 2023.

Invinity’s vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) will help support grid resilience and reliability across multiple locations in Dairyland’s Upper Midwest service territory, with delivery expected to begin in late 2027.

Dairyland said it selected Invinity’s Endurium technology for its ability to perform long-duration charge/discharge cycles as demand and supply fluctuate. Invinity’s US market delivery track record and field performance of existing assets were also key factors in the selection.

Headquartered in Wisconsin, Dairyland Power Cooperative maintains power supplies across a large rural service territory and has been selected by the DOE to lead the REVIVE programme—a multi-site LDES initiative designed to strengthen grid resilience and support integration of critical energy resources across rural Midwestern communities.

Additional project details are expected to be released by Dairyland following an announcement event later this summer.

In November 2023, Invinity announced it would build and test a VRFB with a 24-hou discharge duration in a project launched by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which would also provide techno-economic analysis for the REVIVE project.

In June, Invinity announced the sale of the largest VRFB system to date in North America. Expected to be commissioned in 2027 in Kern County, California, the 32MWh project will be located at Pacific Steel Group’s Mojave Micro Mill, the first new steel mill to be built in California in 50 years.

In May, Invinity secured a contract to design the 1.5GW/2.1GWh flow battery project being deployed alongside a data centre being developed by Swiss company FlexBase.

Invinity president Matt Harper told ESN Premium in June that the company’s technology offers two decisive advantages: superior fire safety and the ability to cycle without degradation, addressing key concerns in LDES deployment.
