Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provider Vertiv is to use energy flexibility specialist Upside Energy’s cloud-based platform to enable its customers to provide unutilised energy to the UK electricity grid.
The new partnership will extend the use case for Vertiv’s range of UPS solutions, which include battery storage, to generate new revenues for its clients.

This will be achieved via Upside Energy’s advanced algorithmic platform, which is able to provide demand response and orchestrate over 100,000 devices or systems running in parallel in real-time.
The Virtual Energy Store will continuously and remotely monitor the UPS of Vertiv’s UK customers who opt in, utilising battery storage to provide flexibility to the grid without changing the primary function and availability of the distributed assets.
This, the company says, will make its UPS offer more attractive for potential customers as these systems which often stand idle can now be used also to generate value.
Speaking Energy-Storage.News earlier this year on the subject, Vertiv’s vice president for sales, AC power and business development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Emiliano Cevenini, said that for these customers “literally waiting for something bad to happen”, there are opportunities for their batteries “to do more”.
In addition, Upside’s platform will also enables customers to track how their batteries are being used and whether they are functioning properly.
Devrim Celal, chief executive of Upside Energy, said: “Vertiv is well-known for its power supply and management technology, making them the right partner to further establish our Virtual Energy Store in which we manage the redistribution of energy.
“This partnership will ensure Vertiv’s UK customers are getting the greatest return on their investment, while at the same time helping to build the smart energy network of the future.”
