Quinbrook taps GE Vernova and CATL for the third stage of Australia’s largest battery storage system

GE Vernova has been selected by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners to supply power conversion, control and integration technology for Stage 3 of the Supernode battery energy storage system (BESS) in Queensland, Australia.

GE Vernova is a US-listed energy technology company spun out of General Electric, supplying power conversion, grid and electrification equipment globally. Quinbrook is an infrastructure investment firm focused on the energy transition, and Supernode is its flagship Australian battery storage development.

With the Stage 3 contract, GE Vernova will have supplied technology across all three stages of the project. Stage 3 will add 260MW and 1,216MWh of 4-hour storage, bringing the full Supernode campus to 780MW/3,075MWh once complete.

Stage 3 has already achieved acceptance under the Generator Performance Standards (GPS), a grid-connection milestone confirming the project’s agreed technical performance standards for connecting to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM).

GE Vernova said the milestone marks its first grid-forming battery storage project in Australia, extending the plant’s role beyond simple energy storage to include frequency support and system strength services that have historically been provided by conventional power plants.

Ed Torres, business leader for power conversion and storage in GE Vernova’s Electrification segment, said battery storage is becoming part of the operating foundation of modern electricity systems, and that the company’s engineering and integration work helped Supernode Stage 3 secure GPS acceptance.

“Supernode shows what is possible when storage, power conversion and intelligent controls work together at scale,” Torres said.

CATL to supply battery storage system as project financing reaches AU$1.2 billion

While GE Vernova provides power conversion and grid integration technology, CATL, the Chinese battery manufacturer, has supplied the underlying battery cells and system hardware across all three Supernode stages.

CATL supplied its EnerC Plus systems for Stages 1 and 2 and will supply its newer TENER S systems for Stage 3, maintaining a consistent technology platform across the site.

CATL said its EnerC Plus system supports back-to-back installation, reducing the site footprint required by around 20% compared with its predecessor, an important factor given Supernode’s location on constrained industrial land adjacent to the South Pine substation north of Brisbane.

The company will also provide long-term lifecycle support for the asset under a service agreement that covers condition monitoring, performance tracking, fault response, and preventive maintenance.

Quinbrook closed AU$469 million (US$305 million) in debt financing for Stage 3 in August 2026, bringing total financing across all three stages to approximately AU$1.2 billion.

Quinbrook managing director and Australia regional lead Tim Hornemand said the company followed the successful delivery of both Origin-contracted stages on schedule, a result he described as reflecting the complexity of commissioning utility-scale battery projects in Australia.

Origin Energy holds tolling agreements for Supernode’s first two stages, while Quinbrook separately signed a 1,010MWh offtake agreement with Queensland state-owned generator Stanwell covering capacity across the site.

With Stage 2 in commercial operation, Supernode became the largest operational battery storage system in the NEM in July 2026, a position it is set to extend once Stage 3 comes online.

Quinbrook and CATL are also working together on EnerQB, an 8-hour duration battery storage technology unveiled for potential use in future stages of the Supernode development, reflecting a broader industry shift toward longer-duration systems as grid operators look for storage capable of shifting renewable energy generation across more of the day.
