The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is to run a workshop in Germany next month to canvas final opinion ahead of publishing its first roadmap for electricity storage technologies.

The agency will host a workshop at the Energy Storage Europe 2015 Conference and Expo in Düsseldorf on March 10 to inform the development of its storage roadmap, which is due for publication later this year.

The roadmap was pledged last year as part of REmap 2030, IRENA’s overarching plan to double the share of renewable energy in world’s energy mix between 2010 and 2030, from 20 to 40%, to help stave off the worst effects of climate change.

To achieve that aim, IRENA calculates that an estimated 160GW of battery storage will be needed, making storage a vital element in the renewable energy expansion. But with storage still a relatively new technology, IRENA is developing the roadmap to guide its 139 member states on the key activities needed to support energy storage for the global expansion of renewable energy.

“Electricity storage systems can support the accelerated deployment of renewable power generation in multiple applications from residential to utility-scale,” said Dolf Gielen, director of IRENA’s Innovation and Technology Center. “International cooperation to exchange best practices and coordinate efforts to reduce costs and facilitate deployment are critical at this stage, which is why the roadmap for electricity storage will be instrumental.”

The workshop, entitled ‘International Energy Storage Policy and Regulation’, is the second IRENA has hosted at the annual Energy Storage Europe event. Its aim is to gather input and feedback for the roadmap, which IRENA expects to publish in the summer.
