Sineng Electric, in collaboration with Trina Storage, has delivered a major milestone in global energy cooperation with the grid connection and commercial operation of the Abydos 150MW/300MWh utility-scale energy storage system in Egypt. The landmark project marks a significant step forward in Sineng’s efforts to expand its global footprint and extend energy collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Located in Kom Ombo, the project is part of a 500MW solar park and represents Egypt’s first grid-connected, utility-scale battery energy storage system, filling a critical gap in the country’s electricity grid for large-scale energy storage applications.

To meet the 220kV grid connection requirement with an available capacity of no less than 150MW, Sineng carried out precise simulations considering system efficiency, high-temperature derating and reactive power output. Based on the results, the company supplied 36 sets of its 5MW central PCS MV turnkey station, each composed of four 1725kW central PCS units in a margin design. These systems were paired with Trina Storage’s Elementa 2 solution to form a highly competitive configuration, maximizing cost-efficiency and customer value. The solution offers exceptional environmental adaptability and reliability, equipped with an intelligent air-cooled thermal control system, which enables it to maintain efficient operation, even in the region’s extreme conditions of 50°C with high dust levels. Standard 40-foot containers significantly improve transportation efficiency and ensure rapid, modular deployment.

The successful commissioning of the Abydos project delivers a compelling reference case for solar-plus-storage systems in Egypt and the wider North African region. It also marks a pivotal moment in Sineng’s global strategy, using Egypt as a launchpad to operate across the emerging markets of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
