More BESS news from across Europe, with ContourGlobal and Alpiq striking sizeable deals in Greece and France, Iberdrola putting projects into operation in Spain, and other project news in Germany, Poland, Denmark and Southeast Europe.
It’s been another busy week of battery energy storage system (BESS) project deal-making and activity in Europe, which we have recently been compiling in roundups: see last week’s here and the week prior’s here.
The ramp-up in activity is timely with the Energy Storage Summit EU 2026 in London now less than a month away, on 24-25 February.
ContourGlobal buys 500MW/2GWh Greek portfolio
Independent power producer (IPP) ContourGlobal has acquired a 500M/2,000MWh BESS, 37MW solar portfolio in Greece.

The solar portion, comprising 26 projects commissioned between 2011 and 2022 and previously owned by Quest Energy, is in operation with fully contracted revenues under feed-in-tariff schemes.
The six-project BESS portfolio, meanwhile, is at a “mature stage” of development, having been acquired from developers Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and Zephiros.
Construction at the first, a 100MW/400MWh BESS, ‘Taxiarches’, is set to begin imminently for commercial operation in 2027. It will be one of the first merchant BESS in Greece, ContourGlobal claimed. All six projects are fully eligible under Greece’s Priority Regime for BESS projects, launched in March 2025 to fast-track up to 4.7GW of standalone BESS.
The fact they are merchant does confirm, however, that they were not winners in Greece’s energy storage capex support scheme, funded by the EU-wide Recovery and Resilience facility. The scheme aimed to kickstart the country’s storage industry, which will be needed as more renewables come online.
Other companies have been progressing winning projects recently. Motor Oil Renewable Energy (MORE) announced the completion of three projects totalling 72MW/144MWh last week, while utility Public Power Corporation (PPC) launched construction on a portfolio last year.
ContourGlobal has emerged as a major BESS owner-operator across the globe this past year. At the start of the month it put a 505MWh project into operation in Bulgaria. It also owns the first three phases (totalling 415MW solar and 2.5GWh BESS) of the huge Oasis de Atacama solar-plus-storage project in Chile. In July last year, it acquired 1.6GW of Italian projects.
Alpiq buys second BESS from Harmony Energy in France
Switzerland-headquartered power firm Alpiq has acquired another 100MW/200MWh BESS in France from UK-based Harmony Energy.
It has bought the 100MW/200MWh Cheviré BESS in the port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire, which Harmony put into commercial operation at the end of 2025, following energisation in August.
Alpiq already acquired an identically-sized project in Oise, north of Paris, in November 2024. That project is set to come online in August this year.
Energy-Storage.news caught up with Harmony Energy CEO Peter Kavanagh last year to discuss the firm’s new strategy after it sold its flagship Harmony Energy Inceme Trust UK BESS fund.
Iberdrola commissions Spain’s largest BESS projects
Spanish power firm Iberdrola, meanwhile, has commissioned what it called Spain’s first two large-scale BESS facilities in Alarcón.
The Romeral and Olmedilla projects have a capacity of around 30MW/60MWh each. They are part of a six-project portfolio that won PERTE funding, at which the company started construction last year. The six combined, totalling 173MW of power, won €37.5 million (US$44.5 million).
The Spanish government revealed the winning projects for a separate energy storage capex support scheme totalling €840 million at the end of last year. That will support around 9GWh of projects.
R.Power and Axpo tie up for optimisation of Poland BESS
Developer and IPP R.Power has enlisted Axpo, another Switzlerland-based power firm, to optimise the firm’s Poland BESS project in Jedwabne.
Axpo to manage and optimise the project, which totals 150MW/300MWh. Construction has been underway since the start of the year.
See all recent Poland news here, including the results of the latest capacity market (CM) auction and a €1 billion storage capex scheme. The CM has helped kickstart the market, providing the bedrock of the business case. Around 13GW of projects won contracts in the past four auctions, all of which has to be delivered.
Nuvve signs framework deal for three Denmark projects
US vehicle-to-grid (V2G) tech startup Nuvve has continued its pivot into BESS with a framework agreement for three projects in Denmark that it will own and operate.
The framework agreement includes a sales contract with developer E&B Renewables and an agreement with energy storage solutions firm Capture Energy. Capture Energy will design, integrate, deliver, install and commission the three projects using its BESS PowerBox LC product. Commissioning is scheduled for this summer.
Nuvve didn’t say the size of the projects, but said the companies are exploring an agreement for “three additional 10MW projects”, possibly indicating the size of these ones. The three sales contracts for the initial three projects total close to US$5 million. The firm hinted it was close to project announcements in the region a few weeks ago.
Nuvve is listed in the US, and its announcement elaborated on the partnership.
“This framework agreement will streamline the sourcing of BESS for our projects, with modular solutions that enable a cookie-cutter approach to scaling-up our virtual power plants (VPP) run by the Nuvve platform,” said Gregory Poilasne, CEO of Nuvve Holding Corp.
“Capture Energy will apply a portfolio-based pricing strategy and efficient delivery through a volume- and standardisation-based approach for Nuvve to fully benefit from our cutting-edge expertise in batteries and all the advantages of our BESS products,” said Niklas Tjäder, CEO of Capture Energy.
Terralayr finances nine-project, 112MW/238MWh Germany portfolio
German virtual tolling platform and BESS owner-operator Terralayr has completed a €60 million project financing deal with ABN AMRO Bank N.V. and Commerzbank AG for nine projects in Germany totalling 112MW/238MWh of capacity. It is in addition to an equity raise it completed last week, for which CEO Philipp Mann spoke to Energy-Storage.news.
Fortis Energy proceeding to construction on solar-plus-storage projects in Serbia, Albania
IPP Fortis Energy is to start building a 36MWh BESS at its 135MWp Nocaj 1 solar PV plant in Serbia. In December, it invited engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) bids for a 75MW solar, 25MWh BESS in nearby Albania, as covered by our colleagues at PV Tech.
Fortis Energy is set to install a 36 MWh BESS for the 135 MWp Nocaj 1, which is the first phase of the 270MW Sremska Mitrovica SPP/BESS project in Serbia. Construction is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2026. Upon completion, the facility will stand as one of the largest hybrid energy plants in Central and Eastern Europe.
Low Carbon completes £500+ million debt refi for solar and storage pipeline
Renewable energy developer and IPP Low Carbon has completed a debt raise of more than £500 million to refinance an existing construction line for its 1GW solar and BESS portfolio.
The UK-headquartered firm will put the new ten-year Senior Facility towards its solar and BESS assets under construction or operation in the UK, Germany and Poland. It is a platform financing and may also include new assets in future.
The debt raise is one of the largest done in European renewables, Low Carbon claimed. It is part of the capital structure that is being undertaken as part of infrastructure fund CVC DIF’s investment into the company, announced in December 2025.
In October, Low Carbon sold a 6GW BESS development portfolio in the Netherlands to owner-operator S4 Energy.
