Developer BrightNight and independent power producer (IPP) Cordelio Power have announced financial close of the 200MW/800MWh Greenwater battery energy storage system (BESS) in Washington state, US.
Greenwater, located in Piece County, will provide capacity and grid services to utility Puget Sound Energy (PSE).
In 2024, Energy-Storage.news reported on PSE’s signing of the contract for the Greenwater project.
Greenwater is now entering full-scale development and implementation, following nearly US$400 million in total project financing from banks including Royal Bank of Canada, Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, CoBank, ACB, National Bank of Canada, Fédération des caisses Desjardins du Québec, and Zions Bancorporation, N.A.

The BESS will utilise 250 containerised BESS units with lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cell technology and connect to the grid via short line to the pre-existing White River Substation.
Brightnight will utilise its proprietary AI-based software platform, PowerAlpha, which the company states can optimise the design, development, and operation of renewable energy and storage assets. The project is scheduled to reach commercial operation in 2026.
The two companies claim that Greenwater reduces environmental impact, needs no operational water, and supports regional clean energy and resource goals.
Brightnight stated that the project has been designed to be visually low-impact and that it coordinated with the local fire service, including developing response plans. The project is expected to add approximately US$43 million to the local tax base over its lifetime, and the developer has committed to supporting community initiatives such as promoting STEM education.
BrightNight and Cordelio further highlighted their community engagement activities, having engaged with landowners and project stakeholders throughout Greenwater’s development.
In November, the two companies reached financial close for the Pioneer Clean Energy Centre in Yuma, Arizona, US, featuring 300MWac of solar PV and a 300MW/1,200MWh BESS.
In February, they announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) for Pioneer with utility Arizona Public Service (APS).
Cordelio has partnered with BrightNight multiple times, including on Box Canyon, a 300MW solar PV and 600MWh BESS project in Pinal County, Arizona. A PPA was signed for that project’s output in July 2022.
